What do I need to learn to obtain a new belt level?

|
| |
There are 10 belt levels in Taekwondo to reach black belt. Each belt is obtained by passing your gradings, which is slightly more difficult and requires more discipline and ability with each higher level.
It is not only your knowledge and ability which is tested, but also your manner, attitude, discipline and your behaviour to others.
Juniors have the option to do half gradings, which means that they stay learning the same knowledge longer and don't gain high rank with little experience.
The belt rankings are as follows:
Yellow → Blue → Red → Cho dan bo → Black

How long will it take you to reach black belt?
The time to reach black belt depends on you, how hard you train and often you attend classes, the student that attends once a week will not learn as effectively and will start missing gradings as they get higher in rank. While the student that attends twice or more a week should be able to keep to the timeline below. In cases where the student is an exceptionally fast learner or gifted in their abilities it is possible to double grade. There are two ways to double grade: 1. the student decides to do a double grading (with their instructors consent) or 2. the student is awarded a double grade when attending a grading by myself because their abilities are of a higher level. The junior students are encouraged to do half gradings and therefore they stay learning each level for a minimum period of six months by doing this they are grading each time and still being involved, while staying at a lower rank for longer. I have found that by introducing the half grading system to David King's Taekwondo Academy the junior students stay training because they don't gain rank too fast and are therefore more able to obtain experience and knowledge.
